U.S. civilian pilots have been contracted by Washington to fly helicopters in raids on a Peruvian jungle valley that is considered to be the world’s best spot for growing coca, the plant whose leaves are used for making cocaine. The raids would mark the first time that American civilians have been hired to take part in operations to fight narcotics trafficking in a South American country. U.S. troops last year joined in massive anti-drug sweeps in Bolivia.
