Golf Roundup : Levi Leads at Houston; Six Players One Back

Wayne Levi had seven birdies en route to a five-under-par 67 Friday that gave him a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the $600,000 Houston Open golf tournament at The Woodlands, Tex.

Levi’s 137 total moved him one shot ahead of six players--first-round co-leader Dave Barr, Jay Haas, Dan Forsman, Japan’s Aki Ohmachi, Payne Stewart and Jack Renner.

Seven golfers were at 139 on the Tournament Players Course, including Masters champion Larry Mize. Ed Fiori, who shared the first-round lead with Barr, was three shots back following a 74.

Miller Barber and Bob Charles combined for a best-ball 62, an eight-under-par effort that gave them a 123 total and a five-stroke lead in the second round of the $500,000 Legends of Golf senior tournament at the Onion Creek Club in Austin, Tex.

Gene Littler and Don January, who have won the Legends the last two years, had a 61 and got back into contention at 128, where they were tied with Orville Moody-Bruce Crampton (a 65 Friday) and Butch Baird-Bobby Nichols (67).

Jerry Barber, 70, and Doug Ford, 64, who chose to compete in the Legendary Champions section--for players 60 and older--birdied the first five holes and also had a 61. Their 127 total put them five shots ahead in the Legendary Champions competition, which has a $100,000 purse.
