The Minnesota North Stars have called a news conference today amid reports that former U.S. Olympic hockey coach Herb Brooks will be named coach.
Brooks, a 49-year-old St. Paul native, coached the U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal in 1980, spent a year in Switzerland, then coached New York Rangers. He was fired midway through the 1984-85 season, leaving with a record of 131-113-41.
After turning down offers from the North Stars, Winnipeg Jets and University of Minnesota, Brooks coached Division III St. Cloud State last season. The Huskies went 25-10-1, finishing third in the nation.
