Darren Nelson went 4 for 5 with two home runs and broke the Chapman College single-season records for home runs and RBIs as the Panthers defeated UC Riverside, 20-9, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Wednesday at Riverside.
Nelson, a senior outfielder from Orange High School, hit a two-run home run in the first inning to break the record he shared with Pat Curren, who had 16 in 1974. He also had a three-run home run in the eighth.
Nelson had an RBI double in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the third. He now has 64 RBIs this season to break the record of 58 set by Marty Castillo in 1978. Nelson’s second home run was the Panthers’ 46th of the season, also a single-season record.
