Arthur F. Burns Stable After Triple Bypass

BALTIMORE — Arthur F. Burns, former Federal Reserve Board chairman and former ambassador to West Germany, was in critical but stable condition today and “on the track of recovery” following triple bypass surgery, doctors said.
Friends said Burns entered Johns Hopkins Hospital last week after doctors diagnosed a heart problem. Burns, 82, who retired as ambassador in 1985 after four years in Bonn, was chairman of the Federal Reserve Board from 1970 to 1978.
