Unisys Posts $110-Million Profit in First Quarter

Unisys Corp.’s first-quarter profit totaled $110.2 million, nearly seven times as much as its predecessor, Burroughs Corp., earned a year earlier before swallowing Sperry Corp., Unisys said Tuesday.
The $4.8 billion merger last year created the world’s second-largest computer manufacturer, ranking after industry leader International Business Machines Corp.
Unisys reported that its first-quarter revenue was $2.42 billion.
In first quarter of 1986, the old Burroughs had net income of $16 million.
In the year-earlier quarter, Sperry before the merger reported $115.3 million in net income. Comparison between the new company and the two old ones is impossible because of sales of divisions and other changes.
The companies “have done better together than they could have done separately,” Unisys Chairman W. Michael Blumenthal said in an interview.
