The Master’s College, led by home runs by Steve Reyes and Jeff Preston, scored 13 runs in the first inning and defeated Southern California College, 18-12, to complete a sweep of an NAIA District III doubleheader Saturday at Master’s.
Master’s won the first game, 4-3, when Preston singled with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run in the eighth inning.
In the second game, Master’s sent 17 men to the plate and used eight hits, three walks and four errors by Southern California to score the 13 first-inning runs. The first seven Master’s batters scored as Reyes hit a three-run homer and Preston followed with a grand slam just four batters later.
Preston, who was 4 for 4 in the second game, was 7 for 9 and drove in seven runs in the two games. Frank Mutz, who also homered in the second game, was 6 for 7. Chris Hernandez of Master’s (22-17, 14-4 in district) was 3 for 5 in the second game.
David Mayr (4-3), who relieved starter Kevin Taylor with two out in the seventh, picked up the win in the first game.
