Too Many People Still at Risk
One by one, local governments are taking steps to protect the rights and the health of nonsmokers. Last week, the Orange County Board of Supervisors passed a new law to regulate smoking in the workplace.
County law already covers smoking in county-owned and leased buildings and restaurants. The new law requires businesses in unincorporated areas with 10 or more employees to set aside no-smoking areas for their workers.
The action came after years of debate and delay, but the county board finally saw that the issue was one of public health--and therefore required decisive action.
In Orange County, eight cities already have recognized this and have adopted controls to protect nonsmokers from noxious smoke.
Unfortunately, 18 cities in the county still don’t regulate smoking in the workplace. That leaves far too many people at needless risk.
