Chicago Certifies Vote for Washington at 53.3%

CHICAGO — Election commissioners have certified the results of last week’s general election here, affirming the victory of Mayor Harold Washington.
Washington, the Democratic nominee and the city’s first black mayor, was reelected with 600,290 votes, or 53.3%, in the April 7 mayoral contest. He defeated Illinois Solidarity Party nominee Edward R. Vrdolyak and Republican Don Haider.
