San Diego High School Baseball : Granite Hills Scores in Double Figures Again, Advances With a 22-3 Victory

SAN DIEGO — Granite Hills High School scored in double figures for the fourth straight time as the Eagles beat Point Loma, 22-3, Tuesday to advance to the AAA Division semifinals of the 37th Lions-Mike Morrow baseball tournament.
Granite Hills (10-3) had 14 hits, and Point Loma had 12 errors.
The Eagles have outscored their last four opponents, 68-10.
“It’s incredible how these things happen,” said Gordy Thompson, Granite Hills coach. “I don’t know what’s going on. I just hope it continues.”
Kurt Southworth hit his third home run of the tournament and fifth of the season in the third with one on to give Granite Hills a 4-0 lead. Leading 13-3, the Eagles scored nine runs in the top of the seventh.
Donnie Carroll and George Bishop each went 3 for 5 with four RBIs to lead Granite Hills. Southworth had four RBIs, and Mike Raskin (5-1) pitched six innings.
In other Lions tournament games:
AAA DIVISION Mt. Carmel 13, Santana 3--Ed Van Aelstyn hit a grand slam in the fourth to give Mt. Carmel an 8-0 lead and put the Sundevils (11-3) in the semifinals. Van Aelstyn went 2 for 4 with four RBIs, and Ron Kelly added a pair of RBIs and picked up the victory. Santana is 10-5.
Montgomery 14, Mira Mesa 13 (8 innings)--Montgomery scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the come-from-behind victory. Montgomery scored eight runs in the fourth to tie the score, 8-8, and took the lead, 11-3, after six innings. Mira Mesa rallied to tie the score, 11-11, in the seventh and took a 13-11 lead in the eighth. But Montgomery rallied again, scoring the winning run on pinch-hitter Jesse Lopez’s fly ball over a drawn-in outfield.
Poway 7, Monte Vista 6--Poway scored six runs in the first inning, but needed a run in the bottom of the sixth for the victory. Monte Vista is 4-11.
Patrick Henry 15, Madison 7--Lance Lowery went 3 for 5 with four RBIs to lead Patrick Henry (8-4-1) at Poway. Pin Zinni had a three-run homer in the first for Madison.
Sweetwater 4, Mount Miguel 3--Juan Price hit a solo home run as Sweetwater (5-9) scored all its runs in the first inning at Helix.
Briefly--Southwest 2, Vista 1; Helix 3, Morse 1.
AA DIVISION
Grossmont 9, Hilltop 0--Lance Dickson threw a three-hitter and struck out 11 as Grossmont advanced to the semifinals. Dickson (5-1) has 62 strikeouts in 37 innings. Dave Entrekin was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Rick Twyman added a solo home run for Grossmont (11-3).
Fallbrook 11, Crawford 4--Jason Rusk hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the season, and T.J. Flynn added a two-run triple to lead Fallbrook (11-3) into the semifinals. Left-hander Jeff Lawrence (2-0) got the victory at El Capitan.
Orange Glen 13, University of San Diego High School 5--Ray Chatton had three hits and Duffy Daugherty had a solo home run to lead Orange Glen (10-4) into the semifinals at Hoover.
Bonita Vista 7, El Cajon 2--Jeffrey Crane hit a bases-loaded triple and was the winning pitcher, striking out seven, to lead Bonita Vista (5-11) at Mission Bay.
Mission Bay 6, Torrey Pines 3--Rick Hurley allowed one run in 5 innings of relief to lead Mission Bay (10-4) into the semifinals. Mission Bay, playing at home, scored its six runs on only four hits.
Briefly--Valhalla 8, Hoover 2; Castle Park 9, El Capitan 4; Serra 2, Kearny 1.
A DIVISION
San Diego 3, Escondido 2 (9 innings)--Trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh, San Diego’s Jose Espinoza hit a two-out RBI single to tie the score at Escondido. In the ninth, Joe Deno walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Deno scored on a two-strike suicide squeeze with one out as San Diego advanced to the semifinals.
Mar Vista 5, St. Augustine 4--Mar Vista pitcher Jose Ibarra came on in relief in the second inning with the bases loaded and no outs at University City. Ibarra (4-2) struck out the first batter and got the second to hit into a double play. He pitched six innings for the victory as Mar Vista advanced to the semifinals. Johnny Amaya went 2 for 4, scored twice and had two steals for Mar Vista (7-5-2).
La Jolla 6, San Marcos 5--La Jolla scored the winning run on a double steal in the seventh at San Marcos. Kevin Krause reached third on an error and two wild pitches and then scored on a double steal as La Jolla (9-5-1) advanced to the semifinals.
Lincoln 14, Marian 12--Marian scored seven runs in the third to take a 9-8 lead, but it wasn’t enough as Lincoln rallied for the victory at the Clairemont Colt Field. Pitcher Keith Mitchell got the victory in relief.
Briefly--University City 9, Oceanside 1; Clairemont 6, El Camino 5; Coronado 15, La Jolla Country Day 1.
