Lendl and Edberg, the top two players, were making their first appearances after first-round byes.
Fourth-seeded John McEnroe withdrew because of leg and hip injuries. Ken Farrar, supervisor of the Men’s International Professional Tennis Council, said McEnroe advised him Monday that he had suffered a leg injury in a match against Edberg in the WCT Finals in Dallas last Friday and had reinjured the leg in his match against Miloslav Mecir on Sunday.
Fifth-seeded Jimmy Connors needed just 65 minutes to beat Brad Pearce, 6-1, 6-1, Tuesday in another second-round match.
“My knee condition is good now,” Lendl said. “I was a bit nervous before playing the first match after a five-week break. I had an operation on my knee on March 11 and started practice six days after the operation. I have the confidence to play a better game this year than last year.”
