BEIJING — China’s colleges and universities will enroll 620,000 new students this year, 8% more than last year, the official New China News Agency said Tuesday.
The report quoted Liu Zhongde, vice minister of the State Education Commission, as saying that schools have been expanded to accommodate the extra students and living conditions are being improved.
Liu said 590,000 of the new students will be selected from secondary school graduates and 30,000 from young Communist Party leaders and teachers. Placement is determined by a three-day entrance exam.
The new enrollments will push the total number of college students to 1.9 million, he said. That is only a small fraction of the number of youths seeking admission.
