LONDON — California Gov. George Deukmejian, vowing to make his home state a “world player” in trade, today opened a state European Trade and Investment Office in London’s fashionable Mayfair district.
The opening was the highlight of the Republican governor’s 12-day European trade promotion tour.
The 50 guests, who included officials of the U.S. Embassy and the London and American chambers of commerce, sipped pink champagne and munched on peanuts and raisins from California.
The trade office is part a $9-million-a-year trade campaign by the state government.
The governor said European investments already have created 160,000 jobs in California and that he would like to see that number increase.
