More confrontations between the artistic community and business factions of show business are on the horizon. Battle lines have formed between directors and producers in a war that could shut down all movie and TV production by the end of June. The issue is a new three-year contract involving the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, and there are growing indications that studios and independent producers are out to cut back on several features of the contract currently in force. If the parties fail to come to terms by June 30, the directors have vowed to go on strike for the first time in the 50-year history of the union.
