President Fidel Castro of Cuba apparently will not be invited to the Pan American Games this summer, the Indianapolis Star reported.
Organizers for the Games told the newspaper they will not invite Castro, and officials for the U.S. State Department said no invitation will be extended on behalf of the federal government.
A State Department spokeswoman said Indiana’s two Republican senators, Richard Lugar and Dan Quayle, complained that too much attention had been given to the role that Cuba will play in the competition Aug. 8-23.
Cuba will be the host for the following Pan-Am Games in 1991, and tradition is that the next host country be highlighted in the closing ceremony.
