All good wishes to Delta Airlines on its purchase of Western Airlines. In reading a quote attributed to an assistant chief pilot of Delta, however, (“Delta & Western: The Marriage Is Sure to Fly, but Spats Are Likely to Develop Over Personnel Rules and Pay Scales,” March 29) one feels that Delta could use some consciousness-raising.
Explaining why married couples are not allowed on the same flight crew, Capt. Lynn Hudgins said it was to avoid trouble.
Supposing, he said, that a woman flight attendant is “pinched on the bottom” by a passenger; if the pilot is her husband, “he might come back and punch him one.”
Supposing that a male flight attendant was winked at by a passenger, if the pilot is his wife. . . .
