Is “Hollywood Squares” going American Only?
A memo that “Hollywood Squares” talent coordinator Jodi Berman sent off to celebrities’ agents says that the new Simpson-Rodino Immigration Reform Act “requires us to obtain proof of citizenship from every employee of Orion TV. Unfortunately, this even includes celebrity guests on the new ‘Hollywood Squares.’ ”
Stars will not get paid for appearances until they file photocopies of their U.S. passport, driver’s license, Social Security card and/or birth certificate, the memo says. And: “Should this be too inconvenient, please have your client bring these documents to the taping.”
Some celebs were reportedly fuming, contending that the new requirement was a slap at their Americanism, but Berman had no comment: “That’s a contract. That’s not public information.”
Consider the possibilities: Can Charo be on the show? Does this eliminate Julio Iglesias from a guest shot? Margaret Thatcher? Pope John Paul II?
