Soviets Display More ‘Bugs,’ Say U.S. Gets 1st Prize

WASHINGTON — Soviet diplomats displayed today an American listening device they said was discovered in their new embassy in recent days along with other “bugs” and one official said, “In this area we can give the first prize to the United States of America.”
The Soviet news conference--following by a day a similar media briefing in Moscow--was the latest in a wave of allegations exchanged by the superpowers regarding embassy spying.
At today’s news conference, Soviet diplomats displayed a radio transmitter recently found in marble plates at its new embassy in Washington, and a bug detected in a windowsill.
They also showed listening devices they said were found in Soviet diplomats’ apartments in New York.
