The Southern California Rapid Transit District board of directors postponed for at least two weeks action on proposals to increase the basic bus fare from 85 cents to $1 and to cancel 18 bus routes. After a lengthy debate in which several members voiced opposition to a fare hike, the directors ordered General Manager John Dyer to return April 23 with possible alternatives to his proposals, including salary reductions and delays in equipment purchases. Dyer had urged the fare increase--the first in two years--to help avert a projected $26-million deficit in the fiscal year beginning July 1.
