Alleged mob leader Nicodemo (Little Nicky) Scarfo was accused of murdering a judge and other crimes in an indictment handed up by a grand jury and unsealed in Trenton, N.J. Prosecutors said the new charges, which replace and broaden state charges brought against Scarfo last year, were based largely on information from a former Scarfo lieutenant. The new indictment alleges that Scarfo was involved in the 1978 slaying of Somers Point Municipal Court Judge Edwin Helfant. It also charges him with attempted murder, loan sharking and promotion of illegal gambling.
