The nation’s largest general retailers reported today their sales were mixed in March, with bad weather and the lateness of Easter to blame for negative results.
The nation’s largest retailer, Sears, Roebuck & Co., said its sales rose 4.2% over March, 1986. K mart Corp., the second-largest retailer, reported its overall sales increased 4.6%, but sales from stores open at least one year rose just 0.1%. No. 3 J. C. Penney Co. Inc. said its sales fell 1.3%, and F. W. Woolworth Co. said its sales dropped 4.4%.
