Earthquake Shakes Central Nicaragua

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — A strong earthquake rocked central Nicaragua for about 35 seconds Wednesday, but authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
The tremor occurred shortly before noon and also was felt in northern Costa Rica and some parts of El Salvador, authorities said.
Officials of the U.S. Geological Survey said it measured 6.2 on the open-ended Richter scale and was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 60 miles southwest of Managua. A temblor of 6.1 in the same area on Dec. 16, 1985, injured six people.
