Communist rebels in the Philippines ambushed a constabulary patrol in southeastern Luzon, 60 miles southeast of Manila, killing seven police officers and wounding three others. A military spokesman in Quezon province said the patrol was returning from a town where they had recovered the body of a slain paramilitary guard when rebels of the New People’s Army opened fire. One policeman could not be accounted for after the ambush. There was no report of rebel casualties. The attack was the second major government defeat by the rebels in Quezon province since a 60-day nationwide cease-fire expired Feb. 8.
