Chapman’s Bats Cut Loose Against San Luis Obispo for 20-5 Victory

Outfielder Darren Nelson went 4 for 6 with a grand slam and six RBIs to lead Chapman College to a 20-5 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball game Monday at Hart Park in Orange.
Chapman (4-3, 16-16) has won five straight.
Nelson, a senior, singled in the first, fifth and seventh innings and hit his grand slam in the eighth. Nelson has hit safely in 14 consecutive games. During that span, he’s 26 for 58 (.448) with 8 home runs and 31 RBIs. On the season he’s hitting .381 with 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 46 RBIs.
The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Chapman sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 10 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks.
Bryan Beals and Mike Cruz each had three hits for Chapman, which had 19 hits as a team.
Winning pitcher Jeff Mooney (5-3) pitched eight innings and shut out San Luis Obispo (4-8, 13-20) until Jeff Smith hit a two-run home run with two out in the eighth.
