The number of hospitalized AIDS patients in New York City has increased by one-third in the past year and is well ahead of projections, hospital officials say. A survey of all hospitals by the Greater New York Hospital Assn. during the first week of March counted 1,071 patients with AIDS or AIDS-related illnesses, including 727 patients in private hospitals and 344 in municipal hospitals. Officials said beds are being taken up by AIDS victims that federal health planners figured wouldn’t be needed until 1990.
