Cubs Trade Eckersley to Oakland in Transaction Involving 5 Players

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs traded right-handed pitcher Dennis Eckersley to the Oakland A’s Friday in a five-player deal.

The Cubs also sent minor league infielder Dan Rohm to the A’s for three minor league players--outfielder David Wilder, infielder Brian Guinn and right-handed pitcher Mark Leonette.

Eckersley, 32, joined the Cubs in June 1984 from the Boston Red Sox in a trade for first baseman Bill Buckner. He posted a 10-8 record for the Cubs while helping them win the National League East. Eckersley was 11-7 in 1985 but fell to 6-11 last season with a 4.57 earned-run average while leading the club in strikeouts with 137 and innings pitched with 201.

The three players the Cubs received all played with Huntsville of the double-A Southern League last year. Wilder had a .301 average with 11 home runs and 85 runs batted in; Guinn had a .283 average with 5 homers and 63 RBIs, and Leonette had a 6-4 record with a 3.78 ERA and 10 saves.
