DOOLITTLE, Mo. — Missouri National Guardsmen prepared Friday to join the manhunt for an escaped inmate charged with killing a church caretaker and wounding a police officer.
Gov. John Ashcroft offered the use of 75 guardsmen to aid local authorities and the Missouri Highway Patrol in the search for John D. Brown, 32. Two Guard helicopters were used Friday, but most of the guardsmen were to join the ground search today.
Brown is charged in Phelps County with assault and armed criminal action in the wounding Monday of Rolla police Officer James Horn and with first-degree murder in the shooting death Wednesday of Claude Long, 56, a church caretaker.
