Promoters of a 20th anniversary celebration of San Francisco’s psychedelic “summer of love” received a minor setback when the parks and planning committee of the city’s Recreation and Park Department turned down a request to extend the hours that amplified sound is allowed at the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park, site of a musical “love-in” 20 years ago. Commissioner Keith Eickman told three groups planning the Sept. 12 event that departmental rules only permit microphones to be used from noon until 5 p.m. Bill McCarthy, representing the Unity Foundation one of the event’s organizers, said the planned activities need at least three additional hours of sound, including time to present a children’s section of the show. “This is going to be an historic, one-time event,” he said, referring to the flower-child era. “It will be very important . . . for the image of San Francisco.” McCarthy said he would appeal the committee decision to the full board.
