Deadlines for filing in South Africa’s May 6 whites-only election arrived with a record 476 candidates seeking election to 166 seats in the House of Assembly in Cape Town. President Pieter W. Botha’s National Party, while favored to win a comfortable majority, has been battling strong challenges to its racial policies from both left and right. Considerable attention has been focused on key members of Botha’s party who broke away to run as independents. The most prominent among the deserters is Denis Worrall, who left his post as ambassador to London to run against J. Christian Heunis, constitutional development minister.
