General to Be Nominated as New Army Chief of Staff

WASHINGTON — President Reagan plans to nominate Gen. Carl E. Vuono as Army chief of staff, the White House announced Tuesday. Vuono, 52, would succeed Gen. John A. Wickham Jr., who by law must retire from the post after four years as chief of staff, the highest ranking uniformed position in the Army.
