An Irvine real estate financing executive has donated $100,000 to the UC Irvine College of Medicine to create a research fellowship in the division of cardiology, the university announced Tuesday.
The endowment is from Ed McGrath, founder and owner of the McGrath Co., an Irvine-based real estate financing company. The new “Ed McGrath and Family Fellowship” will provide salary and support for studies of new methods to diagnose and treat inherited and acquired heart muscle diseases, the university said.
McGrath said he was inspired to donate to the heart-care division of UCI’s College of Medicine because he had seen the work it performs. “I was impressed with the division of cardiology--the caliber of the physicians and their enthusiasm,” McGrath said. “I wanted to support their efforts and also give something back to the community.”
University officials said the new fellowship greatly assists continuing research by the College of Medicine.
“Endowed funds are extremely important to the College of Medicine because they help to ensure the future of the institution and our research projects,” said Gerald Weinstein, acting dean of the medical school.
