HARARE, Zimbabwe — Afghanistan and Zimbabwe established full diplomatic relations Tuesday and will exchange ambassadors, a Zimbabwean government statement said.
Government officials said there was no significance in the timing of the announcement less than a week after Zimbabwean Prime Minister Robert Mugabe paid an official visit to Pakistan.
“As a nonaligned country, we establish relations with all countries we believe share our concerns and interests and respect our territorial integrity and independence,” one official told reporters.
The Soviet-supported Afghanistan government accuses Pakistan of harboring its guerrilla opponents. Pakistan, home to thousands of Afghan refugees, denies the accusation.
