Randy Mamola of Santa Clara, Calif., riding a Yamaha, took an early lead and won the 500cc class in the Grand Prix of Japan, the first event of the 1987 World Championship motorcycle series at Suzuka, Japan.
Wayne Gardner, Australia’s top rider, came in second on a Honda, followed by Niall Mackenzie of Britain who started from pole position.
