NEW YORK — Stocks tumbled to their third-worst point loss ever--a 57 point fall--as concern over the impact of a declining U.S. dollar and heightened trade tensions took a toll. At one point during trading, the Dow plunged 80 points.
The Dow Jones industrial average slid 57.39 points to 2,278.41. The largest loss ever was 86.61 last Sept. 11. Combined with Friday’s 36.79-point setback, the indicator has retreated about 94 points in just two days.
Declines topped advances by a 10-to-1 margin on heavy volume of about 208.44 million shares.
