Chinese and Israeli officials met at the United Nations in New York, the New China News Agency reported. It was the first acknowledged high-level contact between the two countries, which do not have diplomatic relations. An Israeli spokesman confirmed the meeting, and said the two sides discussed Middle East peace prospects. The Chinese news agency said China expressed support for an international Mideast conference under U.N. auspices.
