Jose-Luis Gonzalez of Spain set a world record, and Eamonn Coghlan of Irleand lost one when the International Amateur Athletic Federation rejected Coghlan’s time of 3 minutes 35.6 seconds for 1,500 meters at San Diego on Feb. 20, 1981, and gave the spot in the record books to Gonzalez and his 3:36.03 time at Osviedo, Spain, last year. Three stopwatches are required to ratify a world record. Coghlan’s time was taken during a mile race, which he completed in 3:50.6, the second-fastest ever. The mile time was recorded by three watches, but only one watch recorded the time at 1,500 meters.
