Lisa Fernandez’s single in the 10th inning scored Sandy Buckner and gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Antilles Friday in the quarterfinals in the Pan American women’s softball championships at Lima, Peru.
Fernandez, of St. Joseph High School, was the game’s winning pitcher, going six innings and striking out 10. Starter Dede Weiman pitched four innings and also struck out 10.
The game was scoreless after nine innings, and the international softball tie-breaker went into effect.
Buckner, from Cypress High, was put on second base. Gahr’s Kelly Inohye walked and Kelli Moore, of Los Alamitos High, singled to load the bases. Fernandez followed with her hit to win the game.
The U.S. will play Puerto Rico in the semifinals today.
