I totally agree Dick Israel, who was “angry and sad” regarding Andre Previn’s concerts this year with the Philharmonic (Saturday Letters, March 21).
Having lived in Chicago 28 years, believe me, I know what excitement a great conductor such as Reiner or Solti and an inspired orchestra like the Chicago Symphony Orchestra can generate.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic is a good orchestra, and I’m sure its members are as dedicated as those of any major orchestra. I, too, am sad and embarrassed when the orchestra sounds its very best under guest conductors such as Sanderling.
Maestro Previn underestimates both his orchestra and its patrons. He seems more dedicated to lending his name to credit card ads. Other conductors of major orchestras don’t seem to have the time or interest in moonlighting.
