From Times Wire Services

Dave Poulin scored at 3:22 of overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 3-2 victory over the Quebec Nordiques Thursday night at Philadelphia.

The Flyers have 98 points, one less than Edmonton in the race for the league’s best record.

Poulin took a pass from Brian Propp and slid a shot past Quebec goalie Clint Malarchuk.

Michel Goulet scored two power-play goals, including one in the third period to lift the Nordiques into a 2-2 tie with the Flyers.

Before the game, right wing Dave Brown of the Flyers was suspended by the NHL for five games as a result of a high-sticking incident involving the New York Rangers’ Tomas Sandstrom.

During the Flyers’ 4-1 victory over the Rangers March 17, Brown hit Sandstrom near the head with his stick and knocked the New York player to the ice after Sandstrom struck Philadelphia defenseman Mark Howe with his stick.

Philadelphia General Manager Bob Clarke said the team will not appeal the penalty but thought it was severe.

“I didn’t think there should be a suspension,” Clarke said. “It’s the first offense the guy has had in the NHL. It’s not a fair decision at all.”

Boston 4, Edmonton 1--The Bruins built a 4-0 lead, and Bill Ranford shut out Edmonton, the NHL’s highest-scoring team, for 2 1/2 periods as the Bruins cruised at Boston.

Boston’s offense came on goals in the first period by Ray Bourque and Steve Kasper, in the second by Rick Middleton and in the third by Keith Crowder.

Less than a minute after Crowder’s 21st goal of the season at 11:33, Glenn Anderson ruined Ranford’s bid for his fourth shutout by scoring his 33rd goal at 12:08.

Vancouver 5, N.Y. Islanders 2--Patrik Sundstrom scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Canucks at Uniondale, N.Y.

It was the second straight loss for the Islanders, who maintained a one-point lead over Washington for second place in the Patrick Division. The Islanders and the Capitals will play tonight at Washington.

Vancouver defenseman Michel Petit broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period when he beat Islander goaltender Billy Smith with a shot from the left point on a Vancouver power play for his 12th goal.

Calgary 3, Winnipeg 1--Joey Mullen scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Flames at Calgary.

Mike Bullard and Joe Nieuwendyk also scored for the Flames, who moved a step closer to clinching home-ice advantage in the first playoff round.
