Communist Given Italy Mandate

ROME — President Francesco Cossiga today asked a female Communist leader to attempt to solve Italy’s 24-day-old political crisis, marking the first time in the nation’s history that a woman or a Communist has been assigned the task.
Cossiga’s office said the president awarded Nilde Iotti, head of the Chamber of Deputies, an “exploratory mandate.” Cossiga turned to Iotti after veteran politician Giulio Andreotti on Wednesday abandoned his efforts to form Italy’s 46th government since World War II.
