The charred remains of an unidentified man were pulled from a stolen car Thursday morning after firefighters extinguished flames that engulfed the car, police said.
The white 1982 Datsun 200-SX was discovered on fire about 10:20 a.m. on the shoulder of El Camino Real about half a mile east of Jamboree Road, Police Lt. Houston Williams said. County firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes and then discovered a man’s body inside, Williams said.
A license plate check showed that the car had been reported stolen in Santa Ana about 7 a.m. Thursday, he said.
The body has not been identified, and an autopsy is scheduled for this morning.
Authorities are investigating the death as a possible homicide and the fire as a cover-up, Williams said.
Police did not release the license plate number or the name of the car’s owner, whom investigators wanted to interview, he said.
Authorities are asking anyone who saw the car parked on El Camino Real to call the police at (714) 544-5424.
