The International Documentary Assn.’s major thrust next year will be to become a voting branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, association President Robert Guenette said Thursday. “Writers have a branch, directors have a branch, even publicists have one, but documentarians do not,” he said. But Guenette praised the academy’s decision not to remove the documentary film award from the show’s telecast Monday. The association held a reception for documentary nominees Thursday night at the academy and will sponsor “Docu-Day,” a free 12-hour marathon of this year’s documentary nominees, at UCLA on Saturday.
