A link between creativity and madness is corroborated in a psychiatrist’s 15-year study of writers, Psychology Today reported in its April edition. Dr. Nancy C. Andreasen of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, focused on 30 members of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. The study found that 43% had some degree of manic-depressive illness, compared with 10% of a comparison group matched for age, education and sex. Manic depression afflicts at least 1% of the total population, the article said.
