Track and Field : Menj, Hedgepeth Lead USC Men

The USC men’s and women’s track teams won 27 of 35 events Saturday to record victories over San Diego State and Iowa in a double dual meet at Cromwell Field.
The USC men beat San Diego State, 99-64, and Iowa, 123-21, while the San Diego State men defeated Iowa, 128-24.
The USC women topped San Diego State, 102-33, and Iowa, 106-24, while the San Diego State women defeated Iowa, 80-51.
Both the USC men’s and women’s teams have 4-0 records.
Double winners for the USC men’s team were Tambi Menj, who heaved the shot 56 feet 4 1/2 inches and threw the discus 170-7, and Mel Hedgepeth, who was clocked in 47.62 seconds in the 400 meters and 21.75 seconds in the 200 meters.
USC’s Yvette Bates won three events in the women’s competition--the long jump with a leap of 19-2 3/4, the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.39 seconds, and the triple jump with a leap of 41-2 1/2.
Double winners for the USC women were Diana Clements, who threw the javelin 126-10 and heaved the shot 48-6 1/2, and Myra Mayberry, who was timed in 12.10 seconds in the 100 meters and 24.29 in the 200 meters.
Julie Seleine set a school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:18.81 while finishing second behind Iowa’s Renee Doyle, who was clocked in 17:06.71.
