Navy Club Tries Going Dry, Ends Up All Wet

NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy, faced with losses of up to $40,000 a month, wants permission to close what it had hoped would be the nation’s first booze-free military club, officials say.
The Windjammer Club opened on Oct. 1 as an alcohol-free alternative for underage sailors at the Norfolk Naval Base.
The Navy spent $183,000 on a sound and lighting system for the dance floor and $47,000 on a new fast-food restaurant called “Fonzy’s,” but the facility failed to attract sailors, a spokesman for the base commander said.
“It’s just not paying off,” he said.
