Norwalk City Councilman Cecil N. Green outpolled opponents in an important election last week, but he still must defeat the second-place finisher if he is to make it to the state Senate.
Green, a Democrat, finished first with 48% of the votes in a special election on Tuesday to fill the vacant 33rd state Senate District seat. But he faces a runoff because he did not win a majority of the votes.
A strong showing in Orange County by Assemblyman Wayne Grisham (R-Norwalk), who finished second in the polling with 43.6%, may have been all that stood between Green and a simple majority victory.
The two will face each other in a runoff election May 12.
The race has attracted statewide attention from the leadership of both major political parties. Donna Lipper, a spokeswoman for Gov. George Deukmejian, said she is “sure the governor is going to be involved in the general election and do everything he can to help Wayne get elected to the Senate.”
