AFI FILM FEST: THE FINAL WEEK

T he following are capsule reviews of this week’s screenings at the AFI Film Festival of Los Angeles. Screenings take place at the Los Feliz Theater, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Hollywood, except where noted. Tickets and information: (213) 520-2000 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. MONDAY

“Laputa” (West Germany, 1986, 7:30 p.m.). Sami Frey and Krystyna Janda are mesmerizing as lovers who meet in West Berlin for regular trysts; she a Warsaw-based photojournalist, he a married French architect, Laputa (the flying island of Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels”) a metaphor for West Berlin itself. A prize winner in festivals abroad, this juicily acted love story is one of director-writer Helma Sanders-Brahms’ strongest films, and a striking metaphor for a divided nation. It’s also the warmest we have seen Janda, known best here for her performances for Andrzej Wajda. Recommended.
