Sales From Doheny Library

I am writing in regard to the article about the auctioning of the marvelous collection of Mrs. Doheny’s library rarities. It would seem that Archbishop Mahony is really just after the money (the highest dollar) and nothing else.
What makes Archbishop Mahony think that more young men will be going into the priesthood if he swells the coffers with upwards of $20 million? If anything, it might deter the would-be priests who are scholars.
Could it be that he is trying to impress Rome where the Vatican bank is apparently still in trouble?
Also, his putting out an expensive five-color brochure advertising the sale without consulting any of his parishioners seems really sneaky, for want of a better word.
