Carter in Egypt; Next Stop Is Syria

Associated Press

Former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that Syrian leaders may be able to give him answers on American and other foreign hostages held in Lebanon.

Carter arrived in Cairo on Wednesday from Algiers. He plans to travel from Cairo to Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Saturday, then go on to Jordan and Israel.

Carter told reporters his visit to the Middle East and North Africa was private and not directly connected with the hostages. But he said, “I will be speaking with some of the people in Syria who might have new information on them.”
