COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : BASEBALL

Gary Ray hit into a triple play, then redeemed himself with a two-run home run in the 10th inning as College of the Canyons defeated Santa Monica, 13-11, in a Western State Conference game at Canyons. In the second inning, Ray hit a line drive that glanced off the shoulder of pitcher Darryl Wagner. Shortstop Hector Podilla made a diving catch, stepped on second and threw to third to complete the triple play. Mike Bible added to his conference-leading batting average, going 4 for 5. Bible is batting .684 (13 for 19).

Moorpark Coach Ron Stillwell will take a win any way he can, but he was more pleased with his team’s performance Tuesday against Pierce. After beating Bakersfield, 11-9, in a mistake-prone marathon Saturday, Moorpark (9-7, 4-1) came back to shut out Pierce, 7-0, in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark. David Raper went the distance for his second consecutive win, striking out eight and walking four. Corey Aurand sparked a four-run third inning with a two-run triple.

Mike Heinrich struck out three in the final 1 innings to save the win for starter Phil Clark in Mission College’s 5-3 win over Victor Valley. Jim Coley went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and John Chung and Rob Hunt each had two hits for Mission (6-6, 2-4 in the Southern California Conference).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge swept the singles play and raised its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. record to 6-2 by defeating Chapman College, 8-1, at Chapman.

CSUN’s only loss was a default in the final match. Kelley Grattan, Nicole Gillis, Suzie Izmarian, Allison Kincaid, Kris Anderson and Shawn Gilman easily won their singles matches, losing only 18 games.

Kincaid and Gillis, and Izmarian and Gratten won in doubles.

CSUN is 7-4 overall.

SWIMMING

Norm Skorge won the 200-meter individual medley and the 200-meter butterfly, but Pierce College lost to Cuesta, 55-49, in a Western State Conference men’s swimming meet at Pierce.

Skorge won the 200 IM in 2:00.29 and the 200 butterfly in 2:05.15.

In the women’s meet, Kim Reese won two events and finished second in another, but Pierce lost to Cuesta, 83-46. Reese won the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and took second in the 50 backstroke.

Both Pierce teams are 1-2 in conference.

GOLF

Pat Boyd led the Cal State Northridge golf team to the championship of the Stanislaus tournament at Turlock Country Club. Northridge finished with a team score of 914, seven strokes better than runner-up Stanislaus. Boyd shot a 228 in the 54-hole event to tie for fifth. Northridge’s Tony Chieffo finished sixth, and CSUN’s Wayne Tyni and Tim Hogarth tied for 10th.
